Our Rise Against Hunger container has arrived!!

Our most recent shipment of fortified food supplies has arrived in Honduras and is now being distributed to the schools that participate in our Free School Lunch Program!

Thank you to First Presbyterian Church for helping us at the Rise Against Hunger Food Pack in May, and for supporting the shipping logistics to get the food to the thousands of school children who benefit from our program.

C.A.R.E. has received a shipping container full of food supplies from our partners at Rise Against Hunger! The container has been unloaded at our storage facility, and our Honduran Board of Directors is taking steps to distribute the food to the various municipalities that serve the fortified rice and soy-based meals to school students.
Participation in this program has resulted in increased body weight and alertness in students, higher daily attendance, and overall better health and development.
We are looking to expand our food program in 2018- Rise Against Hunger has already asked to double their shipments through C.A.R.E.!

Food Pack event packages 15,000 meals

Last Friday, we were joined by area high school students at First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster to pack meals with Stop Hunger Now. We had a larger than anticipated turnout and in just a couple hours, we were able to pack 15,000 meals (our original goal was 10,000)!

Stop Hunger Now distributes meals through food programs operated by partner organizations — groups like Central American Relief Efforts — in developing countries that promote education, encourage children to attend school, improve students’ health and nutrition, address gender inequalities, stimulate economic growth, fight child labor, and are crucial to address global issues.

Partnerships with organizations like Stop Hunger Now have enabled us to send full 40-foot shipping containers of food to Honduras to distribute to partner schools in need. When we receive these shipments, we can run year-long school lunch programs in 30 schools. Our food program targets some of the poorest communities in southern Honduras, where this may be the only meal a child receives in a day.

As a result of the food program, we’ve seen increased school attendance, teachers have reported that the students pay more attention in class and get better grades. Another outcome of the program is that the project has brought the families of the community together — parents take turns preparing the meals for school children. The food packages come as a dehydrated, vitamin-enhanced rice-soy mix, but families in the beneficiary schools have come up with awesome menus to keep some variety, making soup one day, using the food as filling for tacos or pastelitos the next, and so on.

Overall, the program has been able to effectively target those who need this type of assistance the most, and we’ve seen fantastic outcomes. THANK YOU to everyone who participated in last Friday’s event!

Thanks to those who participated in and volunteered at our third annual 5k last weekend at Lancaster County’s Central Park! Proceeds from the event support school construction projects in our workzone in southern Honduras. After two years of intense rain and mud, we were thrilled to have beautiful fall weather this time around.
